Building an Inclusive Board
Event Summary Board members play an important role within nonprofits, providing strategic guidance, serving as community ambassadors, helping to raise funds and more. It is for these reasons that building and maintaining an inclusive and diverse board of directors is a critical part of all organizations' work. Join us at our free Cambridge board recruitment fair where agency leaders and prospective board members will hear from experts in the field, and will connect about current board opportunities. Speaker Bios Marguerite A. Fletcher, Esq. is the President of Fletcher Consulting, LLC. She is a diversity consultant, keynote speaker and facilitator, skilled at leading workshops on a variety of topics such as Unconscious Bias Awareness, Interrupting Bias, and Managing Diverse Teams. A favorite at law schools and corporations, Marguerite regularly speaks on issues relating to diversity, inclusion, unconscious bias and cultural competence. Marguerite is the Chair of the Board of YW Boston and has been active for many years with the Boston Bar Association. Ceasar L. McDowell is Professor of the Practice of Civic Design at MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning and Special Advisor to MIT’s Media Lab. His work is focused on the design of civic infrastructures and processes that can support our increasingly demographically complex public to struggle with traditions that bind and the interests that separate in order to build a future that is an equitable improvement on the past. Equity in Volunteering Event Summary
A feature of volunteerism is that it brings people together across social divides. Those exceptional opportunities also expose social inequity. How can volunteering work against it? We invite agency leaders, volunteer managers and volunteers to address this complex, thorny issue together. After hearing from our panelists, we will discuss how we can advance equity in volunteer recruitment, training and interaction with program clients. All participants will be invited to collaborate further in 2021 on a citywide “road map” towards equity in volunteering. Speaker Bios Bernette Dawson is an activist for equality and justice in public education in Cambridge Public Schools (CPSD). A co-founder of the Cambridge Families of Color Coalition, Bernette also served on the CPSD Building Equity Bridges initiative. She is a member of the organizing team for North Cambridge Courageous Conversations (NoCaCC). Sue Carter Kahl has dedicated her professional life to working and volunteering within the nonprofit sector. She is an evaluator, writer, facilitator, and trainer for national, state, and local clients.Sue teaches a graduate course on Strategic Volunteer Engagement at the University of San Diego. Jerome Tennille designs social good programs for those seeking to serve the community. He is Manager of Social Impact & Volunteerism for Marriott International and speaks today as an independent advisor regarding organizational sustainability and social impact. Jerome seeks to improve upon the effectiveness of CSR and non-profit programming through intentionality and a process oriented approach, putting the needs of the community first.
