What are Revels’ Guiding Values?
Through its performances and programs, Revels practices the art of participation, fosters cultural exploration, creates connection, stewards traditions, and fulfills the human need for celebration. What ongoing services or programs does Revels provide? Revels creates theatrical celebrations of the seasons through participatory song and dance. Combining artistic excellence with the lively participation of audience and volunteers, professional and amateur performers, Revels is best known for our winter solstice production, “Midwinter Revels” (aka “The Christmas Revels”) which has been performed at Harvard University's Sanders Theatre every December for the past 55 years. In addition to our seasonal celebrations, we host “Revels Singers,” a community chorus for anyone who loves to sing; “Pub Sings” at the Burren as part of the Brian O’Donovan Legacy Series; and collaborate with the Perkins School for the Blind Upper School Chorus for an annual Spring concert. What upcoming events would you like to let other know about?Revels Spring Sing returns on March 15th at The Center for the Arts at the Armory in Somerville. Join us at this family-friendly celebration as we welcome Spring through song, dance, and a traditional Mummers Play! Share a recent story that embodies the work of your organization. After Revels performances and rehearsals, and despite being exhausted, our volunteer adult chorus often goes out to a pub to unwind, and...to sing some more! Revels believes that there is ‘nothing more powerful than people singing together’ and this ritual both celebrates and makes stronger the Revels community. This year, after “Midwinter Revels” closed and there were no more rehearsals or performances, the children’s chorus and their parents created their own “Children’s Pub Sing” to continue the bond developed throughout the Fall and December. All 15 kids, ages ranging from eight to 13, gathered at a historic Cambridge home (they were too large a crew for a private home!) for a potluck and chanteys and traditional folk songs that had been compiled by the parents into children’s songbook! The community that is built at Revels goes beyond the productions we present. Revels is a network of people, all bonded together through their love of song and dance, and they continue this relationship far after their time at Revels ends. Comments are closed.
